Cleaning a dirty oven is one of the most-dreaded home cleaning tasks, especially when food debris has been baked-on for some time.

You might think the only way to combat deep-set grime is with a heavy-duty aerosol. We're not keen on that idea, especially because cleaning a confined space means you're likely to breathe in some of that solvent. Yuck

In this video, we set out to prove that a really dirty oven can be cleaned with simple ingredients. All you will need is baking soda, Castile soap, water and some steel wool.

Baking soda scouring paste recipe

scouringpaste

  • 420 ml (1-2/3 cups) baking soda
  • 60 ml (1/4 cup) liquid Castile soap
  • 60 ml (1/4 cup) water

Mix the three ingredients until it forms a smooth paste. For oven cleaning, apply to all the interior surfaces and let the mixture set for eight hours (or overnight). Wipe the mixture off with a spatula and then use a steel wool scrubbie to work away any remaining food residue. Rinse with water.
