The biggest trend this season? Choosing sustainable clothing
Summer is the perfect time to update your wardrobe with the latest from brands that are committed to doing good for us and the planet. This includes making high-quality garments in fair working conditions, reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfill, clothing that uses minimal to no water during production, and more.
I’ve gathered together some of my favourite items that are made from breathable materials perfect for summer, which will keep you comfortable and on trend for months...
1. The Joe Khaki Dress by Boyish
This safari-inspired dress is perfect for a summer outing, and can even be dressed up with sandals or heels for a comfortable evening look. The khaki material is light and airy, and is made of 70 percent organic cotton and 30 percent sustainable Tencel fibre. Designed in Los Angeles, Boyish remains committed to minimizing waste through its entire production process, including using natural, plant-based dyes, dipping fabrics less to conserve water, and using plant-based shipping bags.
2. Long Weekend Tank Dress by Everlane
Everyone needs a relaxed-fit dress in their closet that they can wear on a hot day. My favourite is this Long Weekend Tank Dress by Everlane. It’s super lightweight, extremely comfortable, and perfect for running errands, travelling and more. Not to mention, it comes in a variety of colours, and can be paired with sandals, sneakers or lower heels for a chic, minimalist look. This ethical brand uses only certified organic materials, and I love that they also have a reusable shipping carton program to cut down on the amount of cardboard that goes out for recycling.
3. Asura top by Ajjaya
Made from 100 percent breathable cotton, this tribal-inspired T-shirt is a great combination of style and sustainability. It’s entirely handcrafted, and is extremely versatile as well. Pair it with jeans, chinos, neutral-coloured shorts, and more for a cool, summer vibe.
4. Jonas two-piece by Reformation
Here’s a winning look for your next garden party, winery tour or mini getaway. Reformation’s summery pieces are all beyond fabulous, but my top pick is this Jonas crop top and high-waisted skirt combo made from lightweight linen out of flax. The tropical floral print is a classic for day or night, and the back detailing of the blouse is super chic. What I also love about this brand is that it’s transparent about its sustainable practices, and you know exactly how much water, waste and CO2 you save on purchasing one of its items versus an average brand in North America.
5. Hemp Blend Button-down by Pact
Made with 100 percent organic cotton and non-toxic chemicals, this easy-to-wear button-down is sure to become a summer staple—whether you’re heading to work or just hanging out for the day. Pact pairs with Fair Trade Certified factories to ensure employees work in safe conditions, and ethical production practices are maintained.
6. All Around Shorts by Pistol Lake
Stretchy and durable, these shorts by Pistol Lake are going to become another daily favourite because they are super-functional. They feature a water-repellent coating, an elastic waistband, and even a snap pocket to store your cellphone. I’d highly recommend these whether you’re lounging around, hiking or spending time by the lake. This ethical brand takes its clothing performance seriously, and spent two years testing out several versions of these shorts before releasing this improved fit.
7. Jemila Tie Top by Amur
This striped blouse by Amur has summer written all over it. Not only are the two colours gorgeous, but I love how the fabric ties in the front to add a richness and texture, versus just a plain cami or crop top. From jeans to knee-length silk skirts to relaxed-fit khakis, this top can be paired with just about anything, no matter the occasion. This is another great brand that’s fully sustainable, cruelty-free, and is on track to feature 100 percent biodegradable bags by 2022.
8. Linen Crop Top by Mate the Label
Linen is one of my favourite fabrics for summer because it’s extremely breathable and comfortable. If you’re looking for a relaxed-fit crop top that’s not hugging the body, here is my top pick. Available in three different shades, it features no pesticides or plastics, as well as 22.3 percent less carbon and 15.6 percent less water compared to other products that use non-organic materials. Pair it with shorts, denim or matching pants for an effortless summer look.
9. Thistle Mini Jacket by Thief & Bandit
From shorts to dress pants and swimsuits, this printed raw silk jacket by Thief & Bandit is a lovely addition to all of your summer looks. It comes in three gorgeous prints, has a structured front drape, wide sleeves, and two large pockets in the front as well. This Canadian brand uses only non-toxic water-based inks for all of its silk pieces, which are then cut and sewn together by hand. Not to mention, all of its packaging is also 100 percent compostable.
10. Linen Daily Slack by Hoi Bo
Here is another everyday summer look that can be worn from a day at work straight to a night out and about. This linen one-piece is feminine, sophisticated, and designed specifically with keeping your movement and comfort in mind. Launched in 2007, Hoi Boi is based in Toronto and creates quality clothing from natural materials that is made to last.
11. Back Step Shirt by Patagonia
This button-down shirt by Patagonia comes in 11 different prints and patterns (so you have a lot to choose from), but the wild iris is my winner. Made with hemp and organic cotton, it’s perfect for hot days—whether you’re heading to the beach, on a quick vacay, or exploring around town.
