The biggest trend this season? Choosing sustainable clothing
Summer is the perfect time to update your wardrobe with the latest from brands that are committed to doing good for us and the planet. This includes making high-quality garments in fair working conditions, reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfill, clothing that uses minimal to no water during production, and more.
I’ve gathered together some of my favourite items that are made from breathable materials perfect for summer, which will keep you comfortable and on trend for months...
1. The Joe Khaki Dress by Boyish
This safari-inspired dress is perfect for a summer outing, and can even be dressed up with sandals or heels for a comfortable evening look. The khaki material is light and airy, and is made of 70 percent organic cotton and 30 percent sustainable Tencel fibre. Designed in Los Angeles, Boyish remains committed to minimizing waste through its entire production process, including using natural, plant-based dyes, dipping fabrics less to conserve water, and using plant-based shipping bags.

Everyone needs a relaxed-fit dress in their closet that they can wear on a hot day. My favourite is this Long Weekend Tank Dress by Everlane. It’s super lightweight, extremely comfortable, and perfect for running errands, travelling and more. Not to mention, it comes in a variety of colours, and can be paired with sandals, sneakers or lower heels for a chic, minimalist look. 4. Jonas two-piece by Reformation
Here’s a winning look for your next garden party, winery tour or mini getaway. Reformation’s summery pieces are all beyond fabulous, but my top pick is this Jonas crop top and high-waisted skirt combo made from lightweight linen out of flax. The tropical floral print is a classic for day or night, and the back detailing of the blouse is super chic. What I also love about this brand is that it’s transparent about its sustainable practices, and you know exactly how much water, waste and CO2 you save on purchasing one of its items versus an average brand in North America.

Stretchy and durable, these shorts by Pistol Lake are going to become another daily favourite because they are super-functional. They feature a water-repellent coating, an elastic waistband, and even a snap pocket to store your cellphone. 7. Jemila Tie Top by Amur
This striped blouse by Amur has summer written all over it. Not only are the two colours gorgeous, but I love how the fabric ties in the front to add a richness and texture, versus just a plain cami or crop top. From jeans to knee-length silk skirts to relaxed-fit khakis, this top can be paired with just about anything, no matter the occasion. This is another great brand that’s fully sustainable, cruelty-free, and is on track to feature 100 percent biodegradable bags by 2022.

Available in three different shades, it features no pesticides or plastics, as well as 22.3 percent less carbon and 15.6 percent less water compared to other products that use non-organic materials.
