Designed and produced using leading green technologies, Aldo’s new Love Planet Collection is spring fashion done right

As eco-conscious consumers and custodians of our planet, we have a responsibility to keep the environment’s best interest in mind when we shop. We’ve created this article on what to look for (and what to avoid) in eco-friendly products, as sustainable shopping does often require an added layer of consciousness, effort and research.

That’s why we love it when reputable companies make our job a little bit easier and offer products that are specifically designed to be easy on the environment. One of the latest companies to do so is Aldo, which has released a new sustainable collection of footwear, handbags and accessories for spring 2021.

Spring 2021 Love Planet collection

The collection features over 14 new styles, including casual sandals made with CleanStep™ Technology, pastel totes made of recycled nylon, sunglasses made from plastic water bottles, and earrings made from recycled metals. We’re also eyeing up the RPPL sneaker, which is made with a recycled polyester knit fabric and Bloom Foam technology.

The Love Planet collection is available online and in select stores across Canada. This is Aldo’s second green collection (here's a look back at their first one), and marks the latest move along its sustainability journey.

Aldo's sustainability journey

Aldo handbagThe Aldo Group began its conscious commitment towards the planet in 2013, when it began calculating its carbon footprint to set a baseline for improvement and began to adopt a zero-waste philosophy. By 2015, Aldo had diverted 88 percent of all waste generated on-site.

In 2016, all Aldo stores began offering e-receipts with each transaction, and the company joined the Sustainable Apparel Coalition. The following year, the company phased out PVC (a common low-cost plastic) from its products, and in 2018 it became the first fashion footwear and accessories company in the world to be certified neutral for its corporate stores, offices and distribution centres.

2019 was a big year for Aldo, as it extended its climate neutrality for a second year, began phasing out single-use shopping bags, and launched its first sustainable sneaker—the RPPL, made from low-impact and recycled materials. It was also in 2019 when Aldo signed the United Nations Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action and set goals to reduce greenhouse gases that are approved by the Science Based Target Initiative.

In 2020, the Aldo Group joined the G7 Fashion Pact and announced that it was certified climate neutral for a third year. In the fall of that year, Aldo launched Aldo Love Planet, the brand's first sustainable collection of footwear, handbags and accessories. 2021 marks the release of its second Love Planet sustainable collection.

While it’s true that us eco-conscious consumers can get overwhelmed with the volume of messages and choices surrounding our purchases, companies like Aldo are making strides to guide us in the right direction.

Happy shopping (and by that we mean happy eco-friendly shopping)!
